My parents had the pervasive belief that I should be anything but “mediocre.” They would often remind me, “you did not wake up to be mediocre,“ and “the difference between 'mediocrity' and 'excellence' is often a matter of effort.“ As a child I was more fearful of mediocracy than demons or not having a prom date. In more ways than one, the fear drove me towards getting better at things, working hard, and chasing the ever elusive success.
